Mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia)

Mountain ash, or Rowan berries contain vitamins (C, P, B2, E, K, carotenoids, folic acid), amino acids, lecithin, fatty oil, pectins, succinic acid, trace elements zinc, iodine and iron. Due to the wide range of available vitamins, the fruits are used in scientific medicine for hypovitaminosis, and are included in the vitaminic herbal collections. The berries are useful in diabetes, especially complicated by disorders of the vascular system and kidney and liver function. The fruits also have hemostatic activity, particularly in hemorrhoids.

The berries have a positive effect on fat metabolism, which leads to a decrease in the amount of fat in the liver and cholesterol in the blood. It helps to reduce blood pressure, prevents the development of atherosclerosis. Consumption of these fruits is especially recommended for the elderly. In addition, they have a positive effect on the digestive glands and central nervous system.

The fruit infusions are used for gastritis with low acidity, urolithiasis, atherosclerosis, kidney stones, gout, rheumatism. Mountain ash fruit decoction is a multivitamin and cholagogue remedy; it is used for digestive disorders, diseases of the biliary and urinary tract, its tincture – for menstrual disorders during menopause, and the syrup – for obesity.

The fresh berry juice is recommended for hypertension, gallbladder inflammation as a choleretic; it is useful to use in cystitis and the presence of stones in the kidneys and bladder.

Rowan is recommended to be used together with dog rose and nettle.

The infusion of berries in ancient times was applied for malignant tumors as an analgesic. In Western Europe, the fruits are used in diseases of the liver, kidneys, diarrhea, rheumatism, metabolic disorders, hypovitaminosis, whooping cough, throat diseases, glaucoma; externally – for wound healing.

Austrian medicine uses the Mountain ash fruit for diarrhea, gastritis and rheumatism.

A mass of berries is advised by folk medicine to remove warts, as well as topically to hemorrhoids. 

* The infusion or decoction is prepared from 1 tbsp. of Sorbus aucuparia berries, taken in a glass of water, boiled on low heat for 10 minutes and cooled; take 1 tbsp. 3-4 times a day as a diuretic and to regulate the activity of the digestive system.

* The fresh juice of mountain ash: to a quarter cup of juice add half a teaspoon of honey. Eat freshly cooked 2-3 times a day.

* Infusion of a mixture of rowan berries and rose hips (in equal proportions, half a tablespoon) in 2 cups of water take a quarter cup 2-3 times a day.
