Thyme (Thymus serpyllum)

Thyme herb has expectorant, bactericidal, anthelmintic and antispasmodic properties. Thyme preparations are used internally to treat coughs with colds, bronchitis, laryngitis and tonsillitis, etc. (as a rinse); in dyspepsia and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Thymus serpyllum extract is used externally in the treatment of small wounds and as an antibacterial agent for oral hygiene.

Its essential oil and thymol are part of many drugs, ointments, lozenges, syrups that have antiseptic and wound-healing effects, and drugs for inhalation.

Creeping thyme contains essential oils (0.1–1%): its main phenolic compounds are thymol, carvacrol (30–80%), monoterpenes (cineol, linalool, pinene). In addition to essential oil, it contains flavonoids – flavones (apigenin, diosmetin, luteolin and scutellarin), as well as up to 7% of tannins.

The taste is bitter spicy, slightly irritating. The odour is fragrant, reminiscent of “Martini”).
