St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)

St. John’s wort is used in mild forms of neurotic depression, such as menopause and nervous exhaustion. In folk medicine the raw material is also administered as an antidiarrheal and diuretic. Hypericum perforatum is considered in enthnopharmacology of Ukrane  as the herb for the treatment of 99 diseases.

Hypericum perforatum contains anthraquinones (hypericin), flavonoids (hyperoside and rutin, biflavones), procyanidins, xanthones; phloroglucinol derivatives; essential oil (monoterpenes) and more than 10% of tannins.

The taste is bitter, slightly astringent. The odour is weak, fragrant.
