Melissa leaves have antispasmodic, antibacterial and antiviral properties and are used to treat headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, nervousness, rheumatism.
Melissa officinalis leaves contain 0.06-0.375% of essential oil, which comprises at least 70 components (60% monoterpenes, mainly aldehydes, citronellal, geranial, as well as citronellol, geraniol, nerol; 35% sesquiterpenes). The content of flavonoids is 0.5% (glycosides of luteolin, quercetin, apigenin and kaempferol).
The taste is pleasant, spicy. The odour is fragrant, reminiscent of lemon.
